Fisher Price have gone a little more hitech recently with their Fisher Price DVD player, and now a Fisher Price kid-tough digital camera. With the camera being kid-tough it is built rugged and ready to go almost anywhere.

The fisher price kid tough digital camera has sturdy grips to allow your child to firmly hold the camera. A built in flash can be found and the whole thing is waterproof too. It is aimed at children aimed 3 years upwards and lets them document their favourite things. The camera has 2 view finders that allow the children to look through with both eyes.
Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera Requirements

* Ages: 3 and up
* Requires: Four AAA batteries
* Easy to Start Taking Pictures

An adult will need to use a screwdriver to install the four AAA batteries before kids get their hands on this camera. With a textured button on the front that releases the shutter and large buttons on the back that let little hands turn the camera on and off, browse through pictures and delete images, using this camera is so easy it doesn’t need to come with instructions.

64MB of memory can be found inside that allows the camera to store up to 500 images. There are 2 resolution settings that see the camera work at 0.3 megapixels and 1.3 interpolated mega pixels. Although the pictures are not going to be the best of quality, it still will be enough to capture their favourite things. Images can then be printed by transferring them to your PC, or viewed on a 1.5? LCD screen.

Hi

I am looking at buying the above camera for my 4yo, it say it has a resolution of 640×480 – pardon my ignorance, but what is that in megapixels? I’m used to seeing mobiles with 1.3 or 2 megapixels etc and my own canon is 5mp, but what does 640×480 work out to?

I’ve seen a cheaper one that has 1.3mp and want to workout if this is better or not worth the extra $$.

cheers

640×480 = 307,200 = 0.3 Mp

same sort of res as most Webcams produce.

That said for a 4yo I would be looking at how sturdy it is as they WILL drop it

As a suggestion, there is always something like the Olympus MJU 770 http://www.digitalfunstuff.com.au/prod1548.htm which isnt really ‘child proof’ however is shockproof and waterproof.

It also has the advantage that you can use it yourself rather than getting a camera that will not really be of good use or image quality.

My 5 y.o. uses my old Kodak 6330 (3.2MP). He treats like a real camera, not a toy; hence he is careful with it and conscious of doing the right thing… that said it doesn’t stop him taking 100 pictures of his teddy and random bits of furniture ;) Great way for them to learn and get into photography. Some of the lower end Kodak’s are pretty cheap and are decent quality being ‘real’ camera’s.

I think giving a digital camera to a kid is a pretty good gift… But the fisher-price job really needs a better resolution. I know it’s only a 4yr old, but I would honestly want 2.0MP in this day and age.

As an indication, the MJU770 is $500+ at minimum (yikes).

I agree, and at around $150 it’s not actually that cheap… while the MJU770 is too expensive…

I might see if I can pick up one of those Kodaks…

Nice bit of advice Drakar. I have a 4 y.o. that wanders about the house taking photos with my old Panasonic portable tape player. He even makes the appropriate sound effects. I think I’ll look into getting him similar type of camera so he can see his results as opposed to making me put the pictures he is currently taking into my "imaginary pocket".

We got our 6yo one of the Kid-tough camera’s for his 6th Birthday, he loves it, and takes it with us when we go on trips, etc.
It takes a nice picture, but they’re not that high-a-resolution. But fine for him, and he’s happy that he’s got his own camera (just like dad).

As a beginner camera for a kid, it’s fine, but as he get’s older, then we’ll probably upgrade it to a proper camera.

if you want cheap but not nasty > Kodak then get the low end Canon Powershot which can be had for $150-170 when on special
